The Hardest Part of Publishing My Book Wasn't Writing It

The hardest part of self‑publishing isn’t the writing. It isn’t the editing. It isn’t even the moment you finally hit “publish” and send your heart out into the world.

For me, the hardest part has been everything that comes after — the part no one prepares you for. The part where you’re suddenly expected to become a marketer, a strategist, a social media expert, and a one‑woman promotional team… all while trying not to lose yourself in the process.

There are so many programs, platforms, and “must‑do” strategies that it feels like standing in the middle of a storm with no map. Every new tool promises to be the answer. Every expert claims their way is the only way. And somewhere in the middle of all that noise, a new author can start to wonder if they’re already failing before they’ve even begun.

When I was writing my book, I knew this moment would come. I just didn’t understand how heavy it would feel. I didn’t know I’d lie awake at 2 a.m. wondering what to post, what to try next, or how to convince someone to take a chance on a story written by someone they’ve never heard of. I didn’t know I’d be choosing between “winging it” or hiring help that costs more than my mortgage on an HR Generalist salary.

And here’s the truth I don’t always say out loud: This journey scares me more than anything I’ve ever done.

And I’ve done some terrifying things. I joined the Navy at 18 on a last‑minute decision. I moved across the country alone. I raised two kids far from family. I worked full‑time, went to college online, and built a career from scratch.

Those things should have broken me. But somehow, this — this dream I poured my heart, time, money, and sleepless nights into — feels even more fragile. Maybe because it’s mine. Maybe because it carries pieces of me that I’ve never shared before. Maybe because the fear of not breaking even isn’t just financial… It’s emotional.

But here’s the part that keeps me going:

The people who show up.

The friends and family who let me vent, who talk me down when I spiral, who remind me why I started. The ones who bought my book, shared my posts, and made space in their busy lives to spread the word. The ones who believed in this story — and in me — long before I believed in myself.

Writing, editing, publishing, and marketing may keep me up at night, but the people who’ve walked beside me through every step make the weight feel lighter. Their support is the reason I keep pushing forward, even when fear tries to convince me to stop.

This journey is hard. But it’s also beautiful. And I’m grateful — deeply, endlessly grateful — to everyone who’s helping me take one step closer.

Five years ago, I bought my first house, started a new job, and decided it was finally time to take a chance on myself and my dreams. That was the moment Santiago Perez was born. I saw an ad on Facebo
